Young Classical Musicians Welcome New Concert Home In Iconic Kansas City Office Building

Violinist David Radzynski and pianist Lolita Lisovskaya-Sayevich rehearse in the Parkway Room, one of two performance halls in the 1900 Building.

The young classical musicians who train at Park University’s International Center for Music have been winning national and international awards, and going on to prestigious positions.

Radzynski says he has fond memories of performing in Parkville as a student — but he has less-fond memories of the performance venue: The university’s Graham Tyler Memorial Chapel, right nea...

The ripple effect of Eric Berry

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — On one of the good days between treatments, Alyssa Crane made the 45-minute drive from her apartment in Parkville, Missouri, to the Kansas City Chiefs’ training camp in the summer of 2015. The trip to camp was a way to escape for a moment, but what Crane really wanted was to meet Eric Berry...

Some of the best basketball talent in the city will take part in the fifth annual summer basketball Brunson League, an NBA pro-am circuit hosted by Baltimore City Community College.

Former high school stars who have played overseas like Patterson’s Aquille Carr, Parkville’s Terry Hosley and Edmondson-Westside’s Stanton Kidd, who was named last summer’s Brunson League MVP, will play, according to the league. Some NBA and former NBA players could join in early July.

Unlike other pro-am teams, participation will come at no cost to the players.

“We are thrilled to host the Brunson Summer League here on the campus of Baltimore City Community College,” Tara Owens, director of athleti...

Hen House in Northland to close next week after 25 years in business

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — After 25 years in business, the Hen House grocery store off N.W. 64th Street in Kansas City will close its doors for good next Monday.

The owners of the store, Balls Food Stores, said sales have lagged ever since a HyVee moved in, directly across the street, in 2009.

“It’s sad. It’s been here for years,” said Stephanie LeMaitre, a longtime Hen House customer. “I’m sorry to see it go.”

All of the employees will have the option to transfer to another store owned by Balls Food Stores in the region. Balls Food Stores employs 3,000 locally at 27 Hen House, Price Chopper and Sun Fresh locations.

Nearby businesses are hoping another store moves into the location.

“There’s going to be an empty lot on the other side of this complex,” said Jennifer Revers at 9Round Parkville gym, ...
